Pranayama and Meditation 101

"Pranayama
is the control of breath.  The breath is regulated and controlled through the practice of breathing exercises.  The duration of inhalation, retention, and exhalation of breath is regulated with the aim of strengthening and cleansing the nervous system and increasing a person's source of life energy.  Meditation is the practice by which there is constant observation of the mind.  It means focusing the mind on one point, stilling the mind in order to perceive the Self.  It is an uninterrupted flow of concentration aimed to heighten one's awareness and oneness with the universe."  Together pranayama and meditation are important tools in achieving mental clarity and health.  The deep relaxation and rejuvenation that comes with pranayama and meditation gently opens the body and mind to new possibilities.

This 4-week series will provide, in the form of 75-minute sessions, an introduction to pranayama and meditation.  We will prepare for pranayama and meditation by beginning with simple restorative poses to quiet the mind and relax the body.  Breath control exercises will be followed by seated meditation to clear the mind and provide an overall stress relief that will benefit an individual’s life and health.  These classes are designed to benefit students and practitioners of all types of physical activity and skill levels but will be geared towards the beginner.
